The isle of Ischia is not only a centre for international tourism, but also a thermal treatment station, among the most important in the world.
The tourist can combine a period of rest with an opportunity for wellness treatments. The treatments are of ancient origin and some of the application methods, although perfected over time, have remained unaltered for millennia. Thanks to its complex volcanic origins, the island of Ischia has a one of the richest and most interesting hydrothermal assets in the world.
The fame of the thermal baths has gone through ups and downs over the centuries: known at the time by Magna Graecia, they were rediscovered by Romans during the imperial era and, after centuries of being forgotten, were studied by physician Jasolino in the late 1500s. Since then the popularity of the island's thermal waters has grown, supported by more and more rigorous research conducted over time by impeccably professional scholars. Today Ischia is recognised as a leading location for thermal treatment.
The thermal-mineral waters spring from underground reservoirs feed by meteorological precipitation: the rain water runs in the subsoil of the porous terrain and reaches the water reservoirs which are warmed by heat sources located in the depths of the soil; the waters transform into steam and rise to the surface. The steam heats the surface reservoirs which generate the thermal-mineral water sources. This is what they are called because they are enriched by the minerals contained in the soil before rising to the surface. It is used to treat various rheumatic illnesses, arthritis, osteoporosis, chronic inflammation of the sciatic nerve, inflammations of the primary respiratory tract and skin diseases. It also has a positive effect against the ageing process, smoothing the skin and helping to combat cellulite blemishes. |
